One of the most common questions from first-time jewelry buyers is whether they need to hold large amounts of stock to run a wholesale business. The short answer is no. Private label manufacturing from Indonesia lets you build a jewelry brand without a warehouse full of unsold pieces. Here is how to structure it.
The No-Inventory Model: Made to Order
Instead of buying stock and hoping it sells, you take orders from your customers first, then place a production order with your manufacturer. The manufacturer produces to your specification — your design, your packaging, your label — and ships directly to you or to your customers.
This works best when:
- You sell through your own online store or social media (you control when you open and close orders)
- You supply boutiques or retailers on a per-season basis (they order in advance)
- You are launching a new line and want to test demand before committing to large quantities
The minimum order quantity (MOQ) for this model at most Indonesian manufacturers is 15 to 50 pieces per design. At Artistica Jewelry, our MOQ is 15 pieces per design for standard wholesale and custom OEM orders.
Private Label: Your Brand on Someone Else's Production
Private label means the manufacturer produces jewelry to your design (or from their existing catalogue) and adds your branding — your logo stamped on the piece, your packaging, your tags. To your customers, it looks like your own collection. Behind it is a manufacturer who handles production.
What you need to set this up:
- Your designs or references — sketches, photos of existing jewelry you want replicated, or selections from the manufacturer's catalogue
- Your logo file — for stamping or engraving on pieces and for packaging
- A confirmed first order — most manufacturers require a 50 percent deposit to begin production
Lead time for private label orders with custom packaging is typically 4 to 8 weeks from design approval.
Starting Small: The Sample First Approach
The lowest-risk way to start is with a sample order of 1 to 3 pieces per design. You pay the per-piece price plus a small handling fee, receive the samples in 3 to 7 business days (for existing catalogue items), inspect quality, and only commit to bulk production once you are satisfied.
This lets you:
- Verify the manufacturer's quality before committing to a large order
- Photograph real pieces for your online store before the bulk order arrives
- Test customer response and take pre-orders before producing at scale
What to Watch Out For
Made-to-order from Indonesia has one main constraint: production and shipping time. DHL Express from Indonesia to the USA or Europe takes 4 to 6 business days, but production itself takes 1 to 6 weeks depending on the order. Build that lead time into your ordering and customer communication process.
Also clarify exclusivity upfront. If you create a custom design, ask whether the manufacturer will sell the same design to other buyers. Some offer design exclusivity for an agreed period or minimum volume commitment.
