Does 925 Silver Tarnish? Causes, Cleaning and Care

Sooner or later every boutique owner who sells silver gets the same message from a customer: "My necklace turned dark. Is it fake?" Usually it isn't fake at all. It's real 925 sterling silver doing what real silver does. Tarnish is the most common worry we hear from wholesale buyers, so here is the honest version from our workshop in Surabaya, where we have made silver jewelry since 2003.

Yes, real silver tarnishes, and that is normal

Tarnish is a thin dark layer that forms when silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air. It is not rust and it does not eat into the metal. It sits on the surface and comes off with gentle cleaning. Even a piece that is stored carefully will slowly darken over months, because sulfur is everywhere in normal air.

925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5% copper for strength. Pure silver would be too soft to wear. The copper also reacts with air, so sterling tarnishes a little faster than pure silver. Any seller who promises that solid silver "never tarnishes" is either plating it heavily or not being straight with you.

What makes silver tarnish faster

  • Humidity, which matters a lot in tropical shops and storerooms
  • Sweat, perfume, hairspray and body lotion
  • Chlorine from pools and cleaning products
  • Rubber bands, wool, felt and some cardboard, which release sulfur
  • Foods like eggs and onions, if pieces are handled in a kitchen

Pieces that are worn often actually stay brighter, because daily contact with skin and clothing polishes the surface. Silver that sits in a drawer for a year usually looks worse than silver worn every day.

How to make silver shine again

For light tarnish, a silver polishing cloth is enough. Rub gently and the piece is bright again in a minute. For heavier tarnish, wash the piece in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, rinse and dry it fully with a soft cloth. Silver dip and silver cleaning liquids work fast on plain pieces.

Be careful with two kinds of pieces. Oxidized or antique finishes are darkened on purpose in the recesses, and strong dips will strip that look away. Porous stones like turquoise, pearl, opal and coral should never go into dips or ultrasonic cleaners. For those, use the cloth only.

If a piece is badly tarnished or the customer is unsure, a jeweler can clean and re-polish it. Customers in Surabaya can bring pieces to our workshop for cleaning and re-polishing.

How to slow tarnish down

Rhodium plating is the most effective option. It adds a very thin bright layer over the silver that resists tarnish for a long time and gives a whiter shine. Many of our buyers order rhodium plating on fast-selling designs for exactly this reason. Over years of wear the plating can thin out and be redone.

Storage makes the next biggest difference. Keep each piece in a small sealed zip bag, ideally with an anti-tarnish strip, and away from humid air. Take jewelry off before swimming, cleaning or putting on perfume.

What this means for wholesale buyers

Tarnish rarely loses a sale if customers know about it before they buy. A few habits help a lot:

  • Store display stock in sealed bags overnight, especially in humid shops.
  • Keep a polishing cloth at the counter and wipe display pieces weekly.
  • Put a small care card in every box. Customers trust a shop that explains care upfront.
  • Choose rhodium plating for designs that sit on display for a long time.

When you order from us, every piece leaves our workshop cleaned, polished and packed individually. Wholesale orders start from 15 pieces per design, and we are happy to advise on finishes and packaging for your climate. You can read more in our care instructions or ask us on WhatsApp.

Common questions about silver tarnish

Does 925 sterling silver tarnish?

Yes. 925 sterling silver slowly darkens when it reacts with sulfur in the air. This is normal for real silver and is not a defect. It cleans off easily with a polishing cloth or mild soap and water.

Does tarnish mean the silver is fake?

No. Tarnish is actually a sign of real silver. Fake or heavily plated pieces often wear through to a different colored metal underneath instead of tarnishing evenly.

How do I stop silver from tarnishing?

Wear it often, keep it dry, store each piece in a sealed bag with an anti-tarnish strip, and remove it before swimming or using perfume. Rhodium plating slows tarnish for a long time.

Can I clean oxidized silver jewelry with silver dip?

No. Silver dip removes the intended dark finish of oxidized pieces. Use a polishing cloth on the raised surfaces only.
