Where to Source Silver Jewelry for Your Boutique: Indonesia vs Thailand vs India

I run a silver jewelry manufacturing business in Surabaya, Indonesia. Know that before reading anything else. I'm not a neutral observer and I won't pretend to be. What I can offer is twenty years of watching the global wholesale silver market, losing clients to Thai and Indian manufacturers, gaining them back, and hearing the detailed post-mortems on why. I'll try to be honest about what each country actually does well.

Indonesia

Main hubs: Surabaya · Yogyakarta / Kota Gede · Bali

Indonesian silver craftsmanship is the real thing. The filigree and granulation work that some of our craftspeople still do is genuinely traditional. Not "inspired by" tradition. The same technique their grandparents used. That's not common at commercial scale in most manufacturing countries anymore.

Practically: lower MOQ than most Thai and Indian factories (30 pieces per design for OEM), full private label capability with logo engraving and custom packaging, Halal certification for Middle East and Southeast Asian markets, and nickel-free production that clears EU compliance without extra paperwork.

Where Indonesia loses: high-volume commodity runs. If you need 10,000 identical simple chains fast, Indonesia is not the right country. For custom, handcrafted work under 500 pieces per design, we compete with anyone.

Thailand

Main hubs: Chiang Mai · Bangkok

Thailand has a mature, well-organized jewelry export industry. Thai factories are experienced at working with international buyers and many have stronger English-language processes than Indonesian factories. Contemporary design is a genuine strength: clean geometric pieces, fashion-forward silhouettes, styles that photograph well for e-commerce.

The trade-off is price and MOQ. Thai factories typically require 50 to 100 pieces per design minimum for OEM work, and unit prices run higher than Indonesian equivalents at comparable quality. If you're ordering at volume and want contemporary design without extensive customization, Thailand makes sense. For lower-quantity OEM with full customization, Indonesia tends to be more flexible.

India

Main hubs: Jaipur · Mumbai · Delhi

India is where you go for gemstone-set silver. The gemstone sourcing infrastructure in Jaipur is remarkable. They can source and set stones at prices that are difficult to match anywhere else. Traditional Rajasthani styles, carved silver, bohemian pieces: if that's your aesthetic, Indian manufacturers are hard to beat.

The challenges: quality consistency varies more than in Thailand or Indonesia, 925 hallmarking needs more careful verification, and communication timelines can be slower. The enormous range of styles is an advantage if you know exactly what you want. It's overwhelming if you don't.

The country matters less than the manufacturer

Honestly. A great Indonesian factory outperforms a mediocre Thai one. A good Indian factory outperforms a bad Indonesian one. The country is a useful starting filter to narrow down which part of the market fits your product range. But you are ultimately evaluating specific suppliers, not countries.

Before committing to any supplier, regardless of where they are:

  • Video call the actual production floor, not just a showroom
  • Receive a sample of exactly what you plan to sell before placing bulk
  • Check that 925 is hallmarked on each individual piece
  • Get a nickel-free declaration if you're selling in Europe or the UK
  • Confirm they've exported to your country before and understand your import documentation requirements

Questions I get asked about this

Which country makes the best quality silver jewelry?

All three can produce excellent quality. Indonesia for handcraft and OEM with low MOQ. Thailand for contemporary at volume. India for gemstone-set work.

What's the minimum order from Indonesia?

At Artistica, 10 pieces per design for catalog items, 30 for custom OEM. Lower than most Thai factories.

Is Indonesian silver jewelry good quality?

Yes. Craft traditions going back centuries. We export commercially to the US, Netherlands, Japan, Germany, and Australia. Quality depends on the specific supplier.

How do I find reliable manufacturers?

Trade shows (JCK, VicenzaOro), Alibaba with Verified Supplier filter, referrals from other boutique owners. Always get samples before bulk, regardless of the country.
